SUMMER ROWING AT LAST!
We are so excited that the summer rowing season has finally arrived! This summer our 50% off Learn to Row programs extend until the end of this month (July 31st), so if you know a friend who has been talking about rowing, this is the right year to start! Come join us on the water for some beautiful Fitness Rowing, fun filled Junior Scullers or great training as part of the Competitive Program. Check out our events and take part in our fun challenges this summer. We can’t wait to see you on the water!!
hatchets LEADERBOARD!
Again this year, we have our Hatchets Leaderboard up! Throughout the summer, we will be tracking the “TOP 10” in three different categories. The challenges started June 29th and run through to the end of the summer rowing season at Hatchets, which this year is Friday, August 23rd at NOON!
FISH GAME: This challenge is open to junior scullers ages only, so 14 and under. On our rowing machines, compete for the top score for the summer in the fish game.
DISTANCE CHAMPION: This challenge is open to all ages and levels of rowers. All on water rowing kilometres count, regardless of where they are rowed. Rowing on a machine, other forms of paddling and other activities do not count. Just rowing on the water, in any location. This year, you have two options for tracking. You can either sign up for strava, an online app that allows you to track your workouts, or you can track your own kilometres any way you choose and then message me each Friday to let me know your total.
Strava is an app that is free for a basic account and you don’t have to track your rows while you are doing them, you can enter them manually after the fact or you can track them with the app while you are rowing. You’ll need to find me to follow me (Kathy McCarthy from Port Carling, Ontario, Canada) and then I will invite you to join the challenge. If you’ve already been rowing and haven’t signed up yet, not to worry, you can enter them in the app anytime.
If you record your own kilometres, you can just keep track on your own and send me a message each week with your new TOTAL. The weekly count happens at NOON every FRIDAY, so if you are tracking it on your own, you need to let me know on Friday morning by text (705-765-1939) or email (kathy@hatchetsrowing.com). If you use Strava, I’ll just check at noon on Fridays.
PULL UP CHALLENGE: New this year, pull ups or chin ups must be witnessed, and you must go ALL the way down and ALL the way up for each chin up/pull up. You can choose to do chin ups or pull ups. I find pull ups harder, so I do chin ups - but it all depends on your muscles and what you are most used to.
Save The Date: HATCHETS HAT-TRICK WEEKEND
August 10th & 11th
Mark the date in your calendar and come join us for one, some, or ALL of the events on August 10th & 11th!
We will kick off the weekend with our annual Muskoka Poker Run, a 22km row/race, launching from Port Carling at 6 am! Then we will head over to Hatchets for our Indian River Relay at 11am - for EVERY SKILL LEVEL of rower. Our Indian River Relay is a short race open to everyone! We race to the first buoy and back to the dock to switch with the next person for the relay part of the race. It is a team-based event. Then we will finish off the weekend on Sunday morning with a long but relaxed pace Row to Windermere! A 20km day trip where we take out our bigger open water rowing shells. If you’re not sure whether it’s the right fit for you - talk to us about it when you come to row, or email Kathy kathy@hatchetsrowing.com.
This Week's Focus is SAFETY on the water!
This week's focus is safety!
Before heading out onto the water - don't forget your life jacket, safety kit, and whistle! Always be aware of other boaters, buoys, and the shoreline around you and IF YOU FLIP, STAY WITH YOUR BOAT, it's visible and it floats! And remember, WEAR BRIGHT, VISIBLE CLOTHING and FOLLOW THE TRAFFIC PATTERN, STAY TO YOUR STARBOARD SIDE.
