Fall Wrap up - News & Pictures

Laurie on her way around Horseshoe Island. We had so many great days this fall!

This fall, we’ve run rowing programs, been on a long distance row, and attended two fall rowing regattas. Our on water rowing season has wrapped up, but we’ve posted lots of new pictures from the season - so check them out! If you want us to send you any of the pictures in case they may be better quality, just email us and let us know!

Kathy and Jeremy, back after their 34km row!

We ran rowing Fitness Rowing sessions Monday and Wednesday mornings, and evening rows on Wednesdays. Jeremy and I took a day and did a 34km row through up through the locks, across Lake Rosseau to the Joe River, into Lake Joseph, and down to Port Sandfield and then back and down through the locks. It was perfect fall day. We attended the Muskoka Fall Classic in Gravenhurst which is a really well run 3km staggered start (head style) rowing race. We also volunteered and raced at the Head of the Trent Regatta in Peterborough which is a 4.6km staggered start race.

This Winter - Indoor Training Recommendations

After any season of training, it is important to take a bit of time to rest your muscles, but then it’s time to get back to enjoying lots of activities to keep your body ready to do whatever you’d like. As the fall progresses, our family gets into some land training for nordic skiing (trail running, strength and conditioning, rowing machine, yoga). The kids also get into some complimentary activities that test and grow their strength and coordination in different ways. This year, the list is basketball, climbing and badminton.

We can’t stress enough how much a long stretching and balance session (yoga!) at least once a week can help you keep flexible and injury free, while at the same time lengthening muscles to allow you to build more strength overall. Plus, doing yoga is so great for your mental health. It gives you time to focus inward and take a wee rest so we can enjoy continue to our full lives. Checkout this link to our rowing yoga video for those up for the challenge (https://youtu.be/rM5F5ciSG5g?si=mn3bmzu_TsR-c4eG)- or you can find many other videos to watch online. This video was made by Lindsey Edwards from Namast’ay in Muskoka - and it is GREAT! It is NOT super musical or professionally done, because we just sent Lindsey our request for a rowing yoga video and she put together the whole session in one shot! Relax and stretch with her.If you need any help or would like to join her for more yoga, get in touch! https://www.instagram.com/namastayinmuskoka/?hl=en

If you have a rowing machine, there are lots of resources online to find workouts to keep your brain busy and allow you to progress and grow. Concept2 has lots of great workout ideas and you can take part in some fun challenges through them as well. Checkout this link to get you started: https://www.concept2.com/training/wod

A few of us are planning to keep each other accountable this winter, through sharing training plans, doing some workouts online together and keeping tabs. If you’d like to join us - email us at info@hatchetsrowing.com and let us know.

New Next Spring - Hatchets Race Crew!

New next spring, we will be offering a group training program available for rowers who are interested in competing at the two races we attend in the fall. This will be the launch of our “Hatchets Race Crew”. The program will include a training plan, on water rowing sessions, independent on land workouts, and monitoring and planning to evaluate improvements and any areas of focus. The program begins in the spring, and those who are ready will race in the fall at the Muskoka Fall Classic in Gravenhurst, Saturday Sept 6 and the Head of the Trent in Peterborough, October 4-5. How is this different from our regular rowing programs? It is different in that we will be working and planning as a team to help each other improve and work towards fall races. Training may not all be done together, since you can choose sessions that match your schedule, but we will meet as a group throughout the year to plan and work together. This would naturally come after level 6 in our Junior Scullers sessions (which are our kids programs ages 8-14), or for adults looking to get into racing, or competitive rowers who would like to train and race with Hatchets. Minimum age would be grades 7-8. but the program will include all ages of teens and adults above that. Previous rowing experience is not required to get involved, we simply complete a learn to row program first and have you come up to speed in our current programs, then join our Hatchets Race Crew as soon as you’re ready! More details will be released in January.

Reserve Now to Stay and Row

As many of you that rowed with us from out of town may know, right above Hatchets, there is a short term Boathouse Apartment. If you row with another club and you’d like a change of scenery, and to train on beautiful muskoka waters, it is an ideal spot to stay and row. We have daily rows at 6am, 7:30am, 8:30am, 9:30am and 10:30am - so you can take your pick of rowing times in the morning (but book early to get the time you want). Then enjoy all Muskoka has to offer from your apartment right in the heart of Port Carling. Book early both for the apartment and the rowing to make sure you save your spot for next season!

To reserve your dates for next year, you can book anytime - either through AirBnB or, through us directly.
